As of October 1, 2022, the bot is no longer active.

When I first started working on Ralsei Bot, I was new to a lot of things. New to Discord, new to JavaScript (which the bot is written in), new to Undertale and Deltarune, and also new to being part of an online community. At the time I made it, I never expected the amount of attention that it got or the reach that it had. I was woefully unprepared for the task up ahead. I spent a lot of time debugging errors, working with my (at the time) very disorganized code, and keeping the bot up while also trying to get sleep and go through a very demanding high-standards high school. I had a thing for making sure that every bug report was quickly addressed, or that every feature was properly implemented.

As time passed, my connection to the Deltarune community weakened. I stopped getting on Discord as much as I tried to save my obviously failing grades. The time that I could spend on the bot lessened as I headed into my senior years of high school.

In 2021, the bot went through a massive rewrite that replaced the original single-file code into a fully-fledged system. Doing all of this work alone was not a small feat; it took a lot of time and effort to get it done (two whole years). That time and effort ultimately burned me out, as at the time I had been pivoting off into other work and I simply got more and more disconnected from the community. When the Discord slash command changes rolled around, I no longer had the interest to keep working on the bot enough to undergo a new rewrite to accommodate the slash command changes.

That brings us to 2022, when the bot was disabled as it no longer had the necessary permissions to read Discord messages. I was starting my first year of college, and was swamped with new work to do. Ralsei Bot fell far to the back of my priorities, where it stands until today.

I've tried a few times to regain my interest in working on the bot. Given that it's on so many Discord servers, I felt a need to revive the bot that many people loved to use. But I never picked up the interest again, not even after finishing Chapter 3. Part of it was burnout. Part of it was depression. Part of it was alienation (not because of anyone, to be clear, but because of myself).

As a result, I don't want to keep anyone's hopes up any longer. I'm sure that the past four years have made it somewhat implied that the bot is never going to be revived. But to make it official:

Further development on the Ralsei Bot will no longer continue.

This includes the website and, as you may have already noticed, the server, which is now in read-only. To protect the users of the bot and deter potentially malicious clones (please understand the risk of inviting random bots to your Discord servers!), the source code of the bot will remain private.

Working on the Ralsei Bot has taught me a lot of things. And I don't think I would be where I am now if it weren't for the bot. I've learned a lot more things now that I could have used for the bot, but I simply don't have the time nor the inspiration to continue. I can never thank everyone enough for their support, and for the community that was there for me when I felt lonely back in my worst years of high school. I'm really sorry that things have turned out this way, and I really hoped that I would still be able to continue. To those who were holding out hope until the very end, I can't ever apologize enough.

Thank you so much for the support over these past years. May our paths cross once more in the future, if fate allows.
